WASHINGTON, DC - Byrd was first admitted to an undisclosed hospital May 15 for what his staff said was a minor infection. While in the hospital, he developed a more serious staph infection and was treated with antibiotics to fight the disease.
His staff announced the senator was released from the hospital Tuesday. He is resting at his home, where he will continue his recuperation and physical therapy.
The news release didn’t say when Byrd might return to office.
“I am pleased to be home in anticipation of celebrating our nation’s birthday with my loving family,” Byrd said in the news release. “I also thank everyone who sent me their good wishes and prayers.”
Byrd’s absence in the Senate, along with that of Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., has caused consternation among Democrats as they move ahead with plans to reform health care and pass regulations on carbon dioxide emissions, according to news reports out of Washington, D.C.
Party leaders realize they are likely going to need every vote they can muster to be successful with both policy initiatives.
Byrd’s whereabouts since entering the hospital have been a carefully kept secret by his staff. His health also has been a secret, with news reports suggesting Gov. Joe Manchin has been planning for the senator’s replacement should Byrd have died.
The governor has dismissed such reports as morbid speculation.
