Body of Wheeling Police Lieutenant Killed in Florida Accident Returns Home

Body of Wheeling Police Officer Home

WHEELING - The body of Wheeling Lt. William Goldbaugh, 46, was flown into Pittsburgh airport Wednesday morning and made its way back to Wheeling.

Residents from the Northern Panhandle to Wheeling lined the streets to pay their respects to Goldbaugh, who was killed in an accident just after 1 a.m. Sunday while vacationing with his family in Florida.

It’s believed that Kevin Cash, 25, was drunken behind the wheel and going the wrong way on Interstate 95, just outside of Daytona, when he hit the Goldbaugh’s.

For colleague John Wroten, the news of Lt. Goldbaugh's death is tough. He worked with Bill for more than 20 years as police officers for the city of Wheeling. They became friends in uniform, in the patrol car, in the investigation unit and together as supervisors.

Goldbaugh loved teaching so much that he announced he was retiring from the force so that he could accept a job at Glennville State College to teach criminal justice.

Visitation for Goldbaugh will be 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road., Wheeling.

Prior to the 11 a.m. Friday funeral, friends and family can pay their respects from 10-11 a.m. at Vance Memorial Church where the funeral will take place.
