Tarp Surfing: 'Riding' Waves Without Water

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - For those wanting to take up surfing but just can't seem to get over their phobia of sharks or simply don't want to get wet, there is still an option ’ tarp surfing.

Surfers and skateboarders alike are turning to the sport of tarp surfing the blog, grindtv.com reported.

The unique sport of tarp surfing is when a rider takes a long skateboard onto a tarp and rides it while someone pulls the blue sheeting over them to simulate riding a wave.

The inventive sport has connected skateboarding and surfing again. Previously the two sports were connected when surfers, who wanted to practice their skills when waves weren't in abundance, created skateboarding.

The sport is gaining popularity, thanks to the Internet. Watch video of tarp surfing .

Tarp surfing recently became trendy after California surfer Homer Henard posted a video spoof on YouTube of him imitating an ex-pro surfer making a comeback by tarp surfing, according to grindtv.com .

With close to 2 million views, it's creating a frenzy of blue tarp purchases by surfers coast to coast wanting to get in on the craze.

Only around since April, tarp surfing has developed a cult following as evidenced by the tarp surfing videos being posted on YouTube, according to urlesque.com .

Surfing Magazine is even including Tarp Surfing in its International Surfing Day photos for a feature in its Oct. 2010 issue.
