(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - A bride's wedding dress is often the centerpiece of a wedding; it's the first item she purchases for the big day. Now imagine taking that dress and trashing it. In a new wedding trend, many brides are throwing care to the wind and trashing, destroying and generally misbehaving in their wedding gown ’ of course it is all captured in photos and video.
Trashing the dress, or TTD, is when a bride decides to have one last hoorah in a photo shoot while wearing her gown, according to TheKnot.com .
Whether she jumps in a muddy puddle or decides to play some baseball in the gown, it's all for fun while making some more memories.
The popularity of TTD is attributed to Las Vegas-based photographer John Michael Cooper, NorthJersey.com reported.
"The idea behind 'trash the dress' wasn't just to trash the dress. The term ’ made it easy for the media to be like, 'Oh, wow, something shocking.' I think the name misled some people to what it really is. I wasn't going out there to 'trash the dress.' I was going out there to do some conceptual piece," Cooper told the website.
Women are seeing it as a chance to get more wear out of their dress and to pretend like they are shooting a spread for a fashion magazine.
Lauren Polanco who participated in a TTD photo shoot in her $1,500 gown told NorthJersey.com , " I can't see myself doing something with the dress other than carrying it around for the rest of my life, so why not take some fun photos with it?"
TTD is catching on around the world too, as evidenced in the Trash the Dress category for the Wedding Photojournalist Association photo contest according to DivineCaroline.com .
The winning photos can be viewed here .
Brides can find photographers who include the shoot in their wedding photo package or seek out another photographer afterward who offers the service. Many photographers are willing to work with a couple even if they didn't shoot the ceremony, according to TheKnot.com .
