Study: Young Women Rely More on Facebook

Updated: Thursday, 08 Jul 2010, 10:46 AM EDT

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - If the young woman at work seems sleepy during the day, there's a good chance you can blame Facebook.

A survey out this week found that 20 percent of American women ages 18 to 34 sneak a peek at Facebook during the night, while 26 percent said they get up in the middle of the night to read text messages, Mashable.com reports.

The survey also found 34 percent of women surveyed said checking Facebook is the first thing they do in the morning – before brushing their teeth or washing their face.

Lightspeed Research conducted the survey of 1,605 adults between May and June for Oxygen Media.

Other findings showed that 42 percent of women think posting photos of themselves "visibly intoxicated" is OK.

That seems to contradict the finding that 54 percent of women do not trust Facebook with their private information, or that 89 percent agree "you should never put anything on Facebook that you don't want your parents to see," reports Mashable.com .

Other findings, as reported by AFP , include:

-- Fifty-seven percent of the women surveyed said they talk to people online more than face-to-face;

-- Thirty-one percent said they feel more confident about their online persona than their real life one;

-- Sixty-three percent of the young women said they use Facebook as a career networking tool;

-- Fifty percent of single women said it's OK to meet and date other singles they meet through Facebook compared with 65 percent of single men.

What about the men?

The Huffington Post reports that 24 percent of men compared to 9 percent of women were more likely to break up using Facebook.

The survey also found that 20 percent of men use Facebook to "hook up," compared to 6 percent of women.
