Report: Jimmy Johnson on New Season of 'Survivor'

Updated: Friday, 23 Jul 2010, 9:39 AM EDT
Published : Friday, 23 Jul 2010, 9:39 AM EDT

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - Former NFL head coach Jimmy Johnson is reportedly going from the Super Bowl to "Survivor."

Johnson will appear on the CBS reality show "Survivor: Nicaragua" this fall, The Dallas Morning News reported citing a source lose to the coach.

According to the Miami Herald , Johnson was denied a spot on the show two years ago when he failed a physical. But the 67-year-old, notoriously well-coiffed former coach has since lost weight and is apparently ready for the rigorous of the physically and mentally demanding game show.

The Herald also reported that Johnson is a total "Survivor" geek who never misses an episode.

For the past month Johnson, who guided the Dallas Cowboys to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in the 1990s, has been grouped with strangers in an isolated area of Nicaragua.

The taping lasts 39 days, during which time the contestants battle harsh conditions with little or no supplies and food, while competing in physical and mental challenges for immunity or prizes. Contests are voted off the show progressively by fellow competitors. The winner takes home $1 million.

Since retiring from the NFL as a head coach, Johnson has worked for Fox NFL Sunday as a pregame show analyst. The taping of the 21st season of "Survivor" began last month, and will not conflict with Johnson's job with Fox.

Before entering the NFL, Johnson began his head coaching career in collegiate football as coach for Oklahoma State from 1979-1983. He then coached the Miami Hurricanes from 1984-1988, where he won a national championship in 1987.

Johnson retired from coaching in 2000 after helming the Miami Dolphins for four seasons.
